Irish superstar Daniel O’Donnell helped to raise more than £30,000 for BBC Children in Need at a sell-out concert at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

Fans queued from 5.45am on Monday to get the best possible seats in the Jaguar Exhibition Hall for the show which was broadcast live on Bob Brolly’s afternoon show on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire.

Daniel O'Donnell Daniel and Mary Duff sang tracks from their new album Together Again including their cover version of Save Your Love which was a massive No. 1 hit for Renee and Renato 25 years ago.

Former T’pau lead singer Carol Decker, who hails from Nuneaton, Blake, Fergal Flaherty, Sean O’Farrell, Aiden O’Brien, Cheryl, Steve Taylor and Sky Sports’ Chris Kamara along with Coventry’s Young at Heart, the Singing City Choir, Celtic Feet and Eager Beavers also performed to the 2,000 strong crowd.

Daniel said: “This was the day we were planning to launch the album and since BBC Children in Need is around the corner, we thought it would be a good idea, along with a number of other artists, to help raise some money as well.

“Mary and myself go to America next Tuesday until the middle of December since we have 27 shows out there which means we miss Children in Need next month.

“It was great to see so many people having a good time and for the money to be raised for the benefit of children.

“I have known Bob Brolly for over 20 years and he is such a good personality and able to make people feel at ease.”

Liz Cooper, of the Ricoh Arena, said it was the first time the venue had staged an afternoon concert and it had been a great success.

“Daniel certainly has an army of dedicated fans because some travelled from Cornwall,” she said.

“Those who were determined to get a front row seat arrived at 5.45am and we served them hot drinks and bacon sandwiches while they waited at the front of the queue.

“It was great the show went out live on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire for those who were not able to get tickets and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves.

“Daniel and Mary’s new album is released next Monday and since he has already had six albums in the UK’s top ten, I am sure he will soon be adding another to the list.”
